How books become an experience!
smartflat-binding also enables digitally printed layflat books.
Have you ever wondered why a book has to snap shut on its own when you put it on the page?
Wouldn't it be nice if you could produce equally high-quality books from your high-quality digital printing?
Do you find it appalling that most of the books we see in bookstores today are bound with glue, emit toxic fumes, require a lot of electricity to process, and are considered hazardous waste when disposed of? This technology has a name: smartflat-technology!
What's the difference?
Conventional adhesive bindings with hotmelt or PUR glue have the familiar stapling effect. Images or texts that are too far inside the binding disappear or are difficult to read.
Books also do not stay open.
There are already numerous options on the market:
1. thread sewing is too complex for such products and means additional production steps - and thus higher production costs.
2. saddle stitching is a simple solution - but looks rather cheap.
3. wire-o does not allow a layout that goes seamlessly over a double page and is very bulky on the spine.
4. smartflat-technology - true bookbinding that is environmentally friendly, cost-effective, simple, and lay-flat.
The smartflat solution
The palamides smartflat-technology takes a completely different approach: the spine is mechanically processed using a special procedure. Almost all paper types and grammages can be processed. In the process, the paper fibers of each individual sheet edge are exposed. The highly flexible hydrosive adhesive can penetrate deep into this exposed fiber structure of the book block spine. The paper fibers are thereby firmly anchored to the sheet edge.
This anchoring gives the books their high tensile strength, which in turn gives them their fantastic impact behavior.
Environmentally friendly smartflat-system
smartflat "green technology" therefore stands for environmentally friendly perfect bindings with perfectly flat impact behavior (lay-flat). An important component of smartflat-technology is the highly flexible hydrosive adhesive, which is applied from a closed nozzle system - water-based with no toxic fumes and no glue residues that have to be disposed of separately. Likewise, the consumption of energy resources is very environmentally friendly compared to other binding methods. The adhesive was developed by palamides together with a well-known adhesive manufacturer especially for the smartflat-technology.
smartliner240 is the name of the innovative adhesive binder that implements smartflat technology for industrially produced books. It is equipped as standard with a closed adhesive application system with side gluing, an automatic cover feeder with bar scoring, and a special delivery in which the books can be gently laid out and bound. The machine automatically implements format changes in the shortest possible time. The format range extends from DIN-A6 to DIN-A3 with a book block thickness of 3 mm - 40 mm. Softcover books can be produced on the smartliner, as well as rebated book blocks for hardcover production.
Unique look and feel
Paperbacks can be held relaxed with one hand. Photo books benefit particularly from this technology. For example, panoramic photos that extend over two pages are completely visible and no longer have to be pressed flat. Cookbooks, instruction manuals, reference books, to name just a few, can be used without restriction.
